While the Abenaki have yet to benefit from federal recognition, we have been actively asserting our rights and seeking to define our future. Around the time of the enactment and later revocation of state recognition in 1976-77, the Abenaki Self Help Association, Inc. (ASHAI) was launched in Swanton to help us solicit federal and state funds that could be used to address needs within the community. In 1981, ASHAI became the state's first non-profit to build a Section 8 Low Income Housing project. Abenaki Acres provides homes for low-income people regardless of ethnic background.

Today ASHAI operates a food shelf, conducts an annual Operation Santa, provides vocational support, fosters economic development opportunities (such as this web site), helps fund social and educational programs and takes an active role in addressing prejudice towards Abenakis and promoting pride in Abenaki heritage.

As of May 3rd, 2006, we have obtained State Recognition which will help future generations to come

ASHAI, Inc. shares space with the Tribal Council and the Abenaki Tribal Museum at 100 Grand Avenue in Swanton, Vermont. - link to maps
